Regarding New California Diesel Smog Laws....

As you may or may not know that California has started there new Diesel Smog Check program as part of Arnold's Schwarzeneggers plan to be on the forefront on controlling global warming, Obama is also looking at this type of program to federally implement in all states as well in the near future.

The current Plan in California starting April 1st is all Diesel trucks and cars 1998 to current 14.000 lbs GVRW and under will be required to have the bi-annual test and they will be looking at anything aftermarket that cold effect the trucks emissions standards. Below is the basic test that they claim takes only 15 min but was more then 45 min with three inspectors at the same time.

1. The inspector will look for any tuners, EGR modifications as well as removed catalytic converters also any air intake modifications that do not have an E.O. order. They will be checking numbers and any none legal Turbo modifications or replacements. The problem is that some of the manufactures have submitted equipment for testing but the state has been very slow on testing to release these E.O. orders.

2. The inspector will then Plug into the DTC port and check for trouble codes and make sure the EGR is working as well as other sensors that the truck requires.

3. The inspector will then do what is called a snap test to check for black smoke, this is done 3 times, the first two check to make sure that the truck does not smoke after it is back to idle for 10 seconds and the third is that if the truck plumes out a black cloud from 5 to 15 feet and last for over 3 seconds the truck will fail the test. At this time there is no Dyno run of the truck or any probe test available.

As of now this is a California Law but Obama has plans to make this national according to a Show I saw on PBS television, Here in California there was very little warning when this law was going into effect and they even sent us the renewal notice stating No Smog Required but held the check for six weeks as well as the tags and then had the nerve to send a notice stating that we in completed the paperwork and that a smog is now required with just 3 weeks left on the tags. Anyway this is info that you may or may not know and thought I would put it out......

I must have pissed off too many Subaru owners . Whenever I would see one regardless of windows up or down I would casually bump up the chip setting, tap the gas pedal a couple times before giving it hell, the black out scenerio! I only do it to the Granola's in the Subies.

Don't worry, I think it is only the first step till they go after the older ones as well :idea: . They are already doing this in California below....

Vehicles in California with a GVW of more than 14,000 pounds are not subject to the biennial smog check. But, according to the environmental protection group ForceChange, they still operate under some of the toughest standards in the nation. In December of 2008, the California Air Resources board passed strict rules to clean-up big-rig pollution. Starting on January 1, 2011, truck owners will have to install diesel exhaust filters on their rigs. And beginning in 2012, owners will have to replace engines older than the 2010 model year on a staggered schedule through 2022. Not confirmed is that all inbound out of state trucks will need the retrofit as well to enter the state…

Dianne Feinstein pushed a law through California's Air Resources Board that now requires small engines under 50 hp to be fitted with catalytic converters beginning in 2008 - the state says such a move will reduce California's emissions from lawn and garden equipment by 50 percent, which would be the equivalent of taking one million cars off the road by 2010. As of now when I look through the northern tool catalog half the replacement engines listed as well as equipment can not be sold in California due to this law. I personally think this Law is another one of Feinstein’s usual bunch of B.S. ideas…..

I just wanted to add one last thing for the people that can't pass the test, the state will give you $500 for the repair of the truck and or give you $1000 if you turn it in to be crushed if you are interested to do so

Most likely, It is very funny that they would suggest giving $1000 dollars for a truck that blue books from 10 to 25 thousand dollars depending on year. One part for a diesel truck cost more then $500 :!: .
