#16 Re: Ranger and RZR Photo Gallery » Need some help comparing Side by Sides/UTVs » 2012-03-25 12:26:53

Can someone who is knowledgable help me out distinguishing the various UTVs?  There are so many manufacturers and models it's hard to know where to start.

If someone can help me with pro/cons of each manufacturer I'd relaly appreciate it.
Is one better for utility versus recreation?
Also, which manufacturer is the best bang for the buck? which manufacturer just makes the best product(but costs more)

Thanks,

Kevin

The Polaris RZR series was designed to be a sport UTV and is used for playing. It lacks bad capacity and the ability to tow heavier loads. It has always been more suited for recreation. If you plan to just buy a UTV for recreation only, this is the machine for you.

The Polaris Ranger or Ranger XP was originally built for utility work. Polaris in 2005 produced the Ranger XP with a 700 cc engine to become a multi role machine. The 500 Ranger is a utility machine and the 700 and 800 Rangers were built for utility and to be a recreational machine as well. The Ranger XP is not as nimble or as fast as the Polaris RZRs but don't have much problem doing the recreation role. If you need a machine to work and play, then the Polaris Ranger XP would be the choice.

The Yamaha rhino is kinda hard to explain. It has a smaller bed and hauling capacity than the Rangers do, and and in stock form are not as fast as the Ranger XP or the Polaris RZR. I would have to put in the same category as the Ranger XP. The Yamaha rhino can be improved with better suspension and engine modifications from the aftermarket which will make it a much better sport UTV. But in stock form, it is out of date in its design compared with the offerings that Polaris has. The Yamaha rhino is a reliable machine but needs a major overhaul from the manufacture to keep it up-to-date with what is available now from other manufacturers.

The Kawasaki mule is in the same category as the Ranger 500 because it was strictly designed to be a work UTV. It lacks suspension and power and speed for any sport use. They are very reliable in the work environment. Other UTV's that fall into this category are the John Deere gator, the offerings from Kubota, the Polaris Ranger diesel, and the Honda big red.

The Kawasaki Teryx I would consider somewhere in between the Polaris RZR and the Polaris Ranger XP in trying to be a multi role machine. I do not have a lot of experience with this model, but understand that it is more suited as a sport UTV than a work UTV.

Remember, your question is kind of a loaded question, each product model within a category does some things better than another. For instance, the Ranger 500 has a much better top speed and suspension than the Kawasaki mule. The Polaris Ranger diesel gets much better fuel economy than a Ranger 500 and so on. Anyways, that is my take on the UTV market regarding models and hope it helps....

There is one thing you can try. You can install a relay between the PCM and the fan, the problem is the ECM looks to see if the fan is connected and the ECM may send a trouble code. I have not tried this myself but a relay between the fan and PCM would take the load from the PCM. If I remember correctly, the PCM is negative switched so wiring it would need to address the negative switching of the PCM. Remember you will need to meter this to verify that this is correct. Anyways good luck and welcome to the form. wink

Hey
I have a 05 ranger 700, i wanted to know if it was possible to upgrade the ecm to a newer one the doesnt have the cooling fan relay built in.
thanks Josh

No, you would have to change the wireing harness as well since that all changed as well. Also you would need the 2007 ecm as well....

#23 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » Winch rebuild? » 2012-01-24 14:44:50

Bought used 06 Ranger 700 with Polaris Glacier plow & Venom 4000 hardcore series winch. When I loaded it on the trailer the guy I bought it from said, he'd always used the winch to cinch down the front when transporting. It ran out fine, wound back in and held fine. When I got home it wouldn't work at all. I finally got it to wind back in with jumpers off a battery directly on the posts on the motor. All that would happen with the switch was a clicking sound from control box. Now it will not do anything with juice to the posts, I tried off jumper pack, battery charger, and jumper cables off my pickup. I see I can get a motor off Venoms site for $38 and brushes for $5. Never rebuilt an electric motor but not afraid to try, I've done a bit of shade tree wrenching, any input or advice would be appreciated, thanks

I have done motors and some are easy and others can be difficult. Your problem may not be brushes and could be windings or as simple as the control relay. If it is not the relay and you not having done motors before it may be better to just get the motor since it sounds cheaper then getting into a big headache and find out it is in the windings.....

#24 Re: General Discussion about Yamaha Rhinos » snow plow/winch/ cable question » 2012-01-24 14:39:19

my rhinos winch has a synthetic rope with a slip over sleeve that came with it on the rope. when i raise and lower the plow the sleeve gets all bunched up in the spool.. what do u guys do to prevent this?

I do not run a plow but Redmoose may have an answer for this or just PM him. I know with my winch I need to run it out now and then and re-spool it to keep it in good shape......

#25 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » tune up my 500 ranger » 2012-01-24 14:34:04

heys guy just curious on what  to tune up on my 06 500 efi ranger it has about 1000 hours with nothing done to it except oil/ filter change cleaning of air filter....
so i figure a  new plug to strart   with.... maybe a valve tune up ?? any info . thanks

Valve adjustments are not needed. Change the plugs and change the front and rear end lubes as well as the transmission. Check the drive built and blow out all the dust in the PVT system. If available grease the drive shaft slip joint and change fuel filter.....

#27 Re: Ranger and RZR Performance Mods » Best Long Travel kit for my Ranger! » 2012-01-13 19:37:36

[font=Arial Black:8e23a22d17] [/font:8e23a22d17]
I just sold my 2006 Ranger XP. I owned it since it was brand new and left the suspension stock. I am buying a 2012 Ranger 800 XP. I use my Ranger out in the desert washes and rocky, sandy hills while I hunt. I like to get where I am going really fast but have found no matter what I do I always bottom outt like crazy flying over some of the bumps in the dirt roads and washes and it also does not stay very smooth at all it beats the crap out of me and gets pretty rough. I want the extra width the Long Travel gives, The extra 12" or more travel you get and the smooth ride is a must too. Mainly so I can get to a spot fast in my ranger with the correct suspension and not bottom out or beat myself to death, also with out causing any damage to my Ranger. Which kit and shocks do you guys recommend. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I know how much the high end ones cost so I would like to stay in the $5,000- $7,000 range. Thanks for your time.

Thanks again,

Matthew

#28 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » In the market for 1st SxS!! Looking at Ranger 800?? » 2012-01-11 10:57:59

I almost never buy first model years of anything because every model year after refines things that was done wrong or incorrectly on the first run models. My 2005 was somewhat an exception and has been reliable but in 2006 they corrected a lean condition with a ECU update and in 2007 was the change in gearing and a quieter transmission and the addition of replacing the PCM with a stand alone voltage regulator and adding electronic gauges. As for 2010 models I would stay away from due to the 800 and one piece trans and rear differential but would think by 2011 and 2012 models most of those problems that would come up should be addressed. I know that the 2011 models had to meet new EPA standards which had a small impact in power output on some models. I would go with the 2012 model over the 2011 model but would still be OK with the 2011. I would not ever buy the 2010 model and would consider a 2009 or 2008 before that model even though it was a 700 motor.

All the sudden one day my ranger would not engage in all wheel drive, but the two drive and two wheel differential lock would work. Then about a month later i put it in two wheel differential lock and now its stuck in that. Any suggestions on what to check out or how to fix it would be appreciated. Thanks
