Be forewarned that an ATV club in Northern Utah was met at the starting point of their last ride and informed that they needed permits by some rather rude BLM guys.

The BLM read about the ride in the club forums and purposely ambushed them knowing full well the club had no idea permits are now required for club rides.

#152 Re: The X Spot » Moab RMP maps - geek lesson enclosed » 2009-03-20 17:16:14

The Moab BLM office published some pretty good maps reflecting the details of the recent
management plan.

Specifically the maps show which trails are open, which are restricted to single track for MCs,
which are ATV only (btw the morons rejected the concept of 50" vehicles and stayed with a
"straddled vehicle" definition for ATVs so RZRs are not legal on 50" trails in Moab)

But I digress.

So here are the maps:
http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/rec … /copy.html

The first thing you may notice is they are two sizes 11x17 and 23xhuge.
Printing them will be a challenge.

I have a better idea.  Use them with your GPS.
Get OziExplorer and install the shareware version.
http://www.oziexplorer3.com/eng/oziexplorer.html

OziExplorer allows you to take a map, any map, scan it in and calibrate it so that you
can get reliable GPS routes and waypoints from it.

It took me about 30 minutes to load all of the Moab RMP maps and calibrate them.
Calibration simply means you select two points on the map and tell Oziexplorer the
exact lat/long of those coordinates.  Lucky for us they are printed on the map.

Now I can use the BLMs own maps to make sure I am going in the right places
using my GPS.

Now I have my suspicions that the BLM is not the greatest map making agency given
that I imported some of my own GPS track logs from actual rides and in some places
there is a severe shift from where these maps show a trail.  That indicates that they recorded
some of the trails using a GPS without waypoint averaging enables (dumbass).

So don't expect perfection but it is a much better solution that simply riding and getting tickets.

The trickiest area is around the dunes, lots of changes there an no signage.  And its patroled.

Looks like I'll be there.
The folks winter in Quartzite.  Good reason to visit.

Depends on what people want to do.
Was planning Marysvale to Moab and back.

Could go the other way.

This last bit we were just discussing a ride over to Great Gallery Via Green River.

#155 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » 2009 Moab Rally » 2009-03-18 19:45:38

We will have trucks and trailers there so we can get to the Archview RV park and go from there.
I'm sure we can sort out how to get us to that end of town even if we have to barrow a large trailer
from the Polaris dealer.

It would be a fast moving trip for the most part, a few fun areas like Rainbow Terrace, maybe a run
out to the end of the overlook down into Hey Joe and swing past secret spire, play in the Dunes
see if one of the geysers is blowing water, hot foot into Green River and have lunch at Rays Tavern.
Motor down to the Great Gallery and do a little hike.

People come from all over the world to see the Gallery.  The term "Barrier Canyon Style" as it refers to
the painted ghost like pictographs was coined in reference to the Gallery.   Barrier Canyon art goes back
as far as 11,000 BP.   The people that found Aaron Ralston staggering up the canyon after he had to cut
his arm of were from the Netherlands, came just to see the Gallery. Bluejohn canyon where Ralston had
his misadventure is just a mile or less south of there.

Check this out for some history.

So do we go before, during or after the Rally?

Yeah I got roped into helping with the UTV Jamboree in August.

#157 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » 2009 Moab Rally » 2009-03-17 22:02:54

I personally would like to take longer rides even if they are not as technical and see more of Moab.  I will be bringing my wife and daughter and will get hung   if I do anything to crazy, or if she has to walk back to camp. roll

Anyone up for a day trip to Green River via the dunes and back?
If we plan it right we could go to the Grand Gallery and hike into the petroglyphs.

Thats a long ride.

Yup thinking either in conjunction with the Rally or in the fall.

Too much snow right now.  Probably won't clear much before the Rally.

I love the Mammoth

Had it on the Green RZR, need one for the S.

It really is the best setup I've seen for offroading.

Just wondering who is planning to attend SideXSide Actions Jamboree in Parker AZ?

Details here http://sidexsidejamboree.com/

Chas,

I'll be there.  Any excuse to go to Moab.  I've been to the previous two rallies.

I think the 2x4 will do fine.  There are a whole bunch of Ridge Runner buggies that come
to the Rally and they are all 2WD.

Plenty of folks with winches and straps but they are seldom used.

See you there.

#162 Re: The X Spot » Newbie here » 2009-03-08 20:35:38

Sounds like a Rhino is the perfect match for your needs! I might have one for sale after riding in the RZR S at the dunes...  :?

LOL, the dark side is winning.

#163 Re: Where to Ride? » Utah OHV street legal information » 2009-03-04 20:56:21

Cool now we can have a parade around Moab!

#164 Re: Events, Rallies, & Races » 2009 UTV RALLY » 2009-03-03 13:34:35

I drove one of Yamahas Stock 450 Rhinos across Rusty Nail in Moab.
If it will do Rusty Nail it will do anything.

PS- I broke out one of their trail lights. DOH!

#165 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Southern Utah Webcams » 2009-03-02 22:49:39

Well I got everything setup and ready except a stupid USB port is not working.
Going to get a hammer out soon.
