I have run a K&N filter on my 93 Honda 300EX since 1997, I wash and reoil it twice a year and clean the prefilter after any dusty rides never had an issue with it.
I wouldnt dare guess how many miles are on that ATV, its on its 8th set of tires, doesnt use a drop of oil and has never been rebuilt and still has great compression.
My old 97 Ford F150 came from the factory with a K&N in it, it got washed and reoiled every 6000 miles, no problems.
Im not saying other people havnt had problems with them, just saying I like them and have had good luck. But I ride mostly on dirt roads, fields and the woods. No deserts here in Maine

The K&N may not be an issue for everyone due to the design of the bike and more importantly the places you ride and the climate. Your 93 Honda does not have the electronics that a Polaris UTV has so oil contamination will not be an issue for you. As for your rhino i will have to look at the service manual to see what it uses for barometric pressure and air temp sensors but contamination of those sensors may not happen due to the location of where those sensors were installed from the factory. Also sand is not a problem with K&N as long as it has no silt in it. We have some dry lakes here that when you run through them the silt is so bad and that is much smaller then 30 microns gets into everything. The Ranger XP pulls clean air through two filters and gets its air from front of the vehicle so it is in front of the dust plume and not in it like the RZR. I like the K&N but if you know you are going to run in silty conditions and if your filter houseing will except a silt sock I would run one or install the stock element or a uni filter for that trip.

Enough Said on this subject.....

I for one am a huge fan of K&N filters!  big_smile  We run K&N's on all of our high end drag quads that we race all over the Western United States in the sand, our bullet bikes, and our trucks just to name a few run with them. I have yet to have an issue.

One key point with any filter is to be sure and use it and maintain it the way it was intended to be. This is the one area people tend to "mess up" when using K&N filters.

The 09 intake equipment is NOT the answer to this problem. It does not solve the problem the 08's have had. I will be posting up reasons why I say this in another thread within the next week. We have been doing some testing on this very issue. Thx.

I would have to completely disagree on the K&N based on over 25 years of use in all types of racing and personal use. The research and testing i have personally done out there has shown that. They do flow much better and that is a fact but they are not good for micronic filtration in silty conditions due to the design and all the info is out there on other truck and tractor sites as well as heavy equipment sites. This information is not just based on ATV/UTV sites. They do make silt socks for them to help control this problem but when they are used they tend to flow worse then a stock filter. I do highly recommend them for anything else though. As for the 2009 air intake fix it may not be a total fix but there is not a lot of people out there complaining about it with the 2009 model year. Matter of fact the fix they did for the 2008 has showed good promise from what i have seen out there and that is based on info I have seen on other sites.  I still think the intake system is a poor design due to where it gets the air from and it should have been built more like the Ranger Xp design which has never had this problem. I will be looking forward to see what you will be posting on this problem in the near future and what your fix will be....

Any Update on the website changes  :?: .

I'll make it a third vote against the K&N.  I've had multiple dealerships and experienced riders in the Phoenix area advise against the K&N system.  They all claim it will let small silt particles get through, which equals bad news for the upper end.  Trust me on the particle issue, I'm speaking from experience (see RZR Oil Usage Thread).  As Rangerdale mentioned, if you do nothing else, and I can't stress this enough, make sure your intake has been updated and the newer filter system installed.  If you don't, you will, and I repeat, will trash the motor!

With all that said, my dealer (the one who rebuilt my motor) recommended I run either the new upgraded Polaris paper filter or the Uni Filter in my new engine.  He said they both do a great job at keeping the dirt out and cost almost the same.  In addition, the Uni is suppose to give it a little more power and can be cleaned and reused.  If you go with the Uni option just make sure you oil it generously.

As for the dunes, I've put about 1,000 miles on mine out there and have had a hoot!!!.  I can't hardly wait for October to roll around! tongue

Good Luck!!!

I would have to agree with the use of the uni filter style as well as a possible choice. Almost all of the Baja off road vehicles use that type but the one thing you must be careful with is the amount of oil you use for the filter due to the proximity of the t/mapp or t/bap sensor. To much oil will contaminate the sensor and could require cleaning or replacement of the sensor.

chasing furry animals that sort of stuff.

lol  I was riding the other day and came across the typical "pissed off", tree hugging, Subaru driving wacko's hoofing it. Politely pulled over and waited as they passed (plenty of time so they didn't eat any dust, or hurt their ears from engine noise) and gave them a friendly greeting... nothing in return except the typical "grumpy face"  I am pretty sure I picked up their Subway wrappers up the trail. So my thought is, I buy the POV and add cross hairs and make some really cool video... "chasing furry animals"   :x tongue lol

About three years ago we had passed some of those sierra club people and did the same thing you did. 10 minutes latter i had 3 flat tires due to the fact they spiked the trail, lucky for me i keep a spare tire, a plug kit and a compressor on board......

Does anybody have a video camera mounted in their RZR? If so, what type and what type of camera do you use? i want to get some good video of some of the riding I do, you know woods, hills, mud, chasing furry animals that sort of stuff.

Video law enforcement security is one of the things i did professionally for LAPD and many other law enforcement agencies around southern California and i know some of the systems go for tens of thousands of dollars depending on the applications like the pips cars that use real time licence plate recognition cameras. But here are a few cheap systems that may work for your application. I have not personally used this product because we were doing the real high end stuff but noticed it in my catalog they send me.

The 4 camera DVR will still need cameras but any 12 volt pencil camera will work or chip camera. I am not sure they will sell to you because you may need a security company account like i do but they are not as tuff on regulation and rules like some of my other accounts. they also have a lot more stuff and pricing and you can browse there site.

That is good news!
I will have it removed ASAP!

I was waiting on that outcome on that idea I had on the clutch limiter spacer removal and found the thread you posted on the PRC site instead roll. Did you do a before and after test in speed so i can put a number in mph gain to my research  :?: .

#490 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » What I hate about my Polaris Ranger 700 XP » 2009-08-21 23:31:46

I love my 09 Ranger and have no regrets about buying it.  No problems to date except a little excessive heat from under the dash.  My dealer says he can fix that the next time I bring it in.  I do all of my own maintenance so it may be awhile till I get in there.  It is very easy to work on.  I have been up and down some real nasty hills and rocks and I haven't even been close to a roll over.  Your wife can feel very safe in a Ranger, just use common sense that's all.  I was like you when I was looking for a SxS.  I test drove them all and eliminated all but the Prowler and the Ranger.  I liked them both, except I have been reading about some Prowler issues, both with their warranties, ability to get parts and reports of non-warranty coverage of clutches, etc.   some overheating problems as well.  Figured I'd wait and see if they get them worked out.  In the meantime, I bought a Ranger XP 700.  It has done everything I have asked of it.

Great post and completely agree  :!: . I know a lot about Polaris Rangers but you have come up with a model I never heard of before  :?: . It shows on your other posting and on your profile that you own a Ranger XT and after doing a search there is none listed on the Polaris home web site and the one that i found searching on the web was a guy driving one in a video with XP emblems on it other then Ranger XT emblems on it  :?: . So what gives  :?: . Is it a typo or what is the difference between an XT and an XP  :?: . An inquiring mind wants to know  :?:  ....

[font=Arial:e4d2034148] [/font:e4d2034148]    New to utv. Just bought used 08 rzr to be used mostly in dunes. Guy's give me some input on best clutch kit and best air cleaner kit .
Thanks for your help.

As for the filter i would never run a K&N in silty conditions on an 08 Rzr due to the Intake issues. If I had an 08 i would update it to all the 09 intake equipment if it was me to make sure there is no issues. Make sure you have at least the Updated at minimum new filter from Polaris and run it. As for the clutch kit go to Dirty Dawg Performance and get there kit. It will make a big difference but make sure you give him all the proper information needed.

#492 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » New Ranger Heat (Flesh Burn) Issues? » 2009-08-18 10:34:49

I just bought my 09 Ranger XT and I have to say, the heat from under the dash is HOT!!!!!!!!!  I'm in Arizona and you don't need that heat when out in 95-100 degree heat as it is.  Will be very anxious to see how they solve it.  I want that kit when it comes out.

This is apparently what they added to the 2010 and should be upgradeable to the 2009 per Polaris and PRC.

Ahh I got ya now, I thought it was a flat spot on the outside. I stand corected again, twice on one thread, Im going to shut up now.  lol

Your illustration and attempt was very nice though  big_smile . Keep up the good work  lol .

#494 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » Razr Idle » 2009-08-15 20:30:22

That is good but it is inverted the other way like a socket and not a screw driver. You would have to make the 1/4 moon from inside the the screw driver.

#495 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » Razr Idle » 2009-08-15 10:54:25

It should be around 1150 rpm....

How do you adjust it??????

I did some digging and found this I did around a year ago on the site.

This is what you are going to need to do, you are going to turn the key on and put the probe on the back of the TPS connector on the yellow wire with the red lead at the TPS connection with a multimeter, put the black lead to chassis ground, back out the idle screw until it does not make contact with the throttle blade, you will need the special driver from Polaris or you can make something that will work, the butterfly will be in its maximum closed position. You should get a reading of .528, if it is not loosen the TPS screws and rotate the TPS until the voltage is reached, when the right voltage is reached tighten the TPS screws and turn the idle screw in until you get a reading of .710 for the 2005 and .640 for the 2006, if you are running the SP ECU it will be .710 volts, this is the proper voltages for the throttle blade position at idle, it is a little hard to do but it is doable, lots of the polarises lose there adjustments for some reason and need to be checked for proper engine fueling, mine was off when I checked it when i upgraded it to the SP ECU and had to reset it.

Everything applies the same for the RZR except the voltages will be .735 adjusted.
