Being street legal will not limit any other use.

The OHV registration you pay now is simply a tax to support OHV trails etc.
I am certain that none of the money from your street legal taxes/fees will go to trails.

Don't know if you will be required to have both, I'll ask.

#302 Re: The X Spot » comments on Joyner » 2008-07-14 08:36:58

I have ridden a Trooper 1100.  Fast, comfortable, seemed capable.
I'd be concerned more about the dealer than the rig.
Most of them seem to be selling RVs and an occasional Joyner on the side.
Not a plan for getting great service.

Guys,
Just a note.  Its really a good idea to have an extinguisher on your rig.

I'm sure dgal wishes he did.  His RZR burned to the ground 100%, even melted the wheels.

I suggest you get one of these....

I just wrote an article for UTV Offroad magazine on this.  It should be in the next issue.
Also writing one for Dirt Wheels.  Not sure when it will publish.

I have an interview set with the state guy responsible for the Inspection manual on Monday.
If he tells me anything we don't know I'll update you here.

#305 Re: The X Spot » Street legal in UTAH... finally? » 2008-07-11 08:24:27

You will be able to drive on any two lane hwy ( 1 in each direction) no matter
what the posted speed limit says.  BTW, the HWY might have a short section that
has 4 lanes like through the middle of a town like in Marysvale.  That does not
mean the Hwy is a multilane Hwy.  You will still be allowed on it.  The numbers of lanes
is a designation given by the Hwy dept.  So effectively it means stay off of the freeway
since every other Hwy in Utah is a 2 lane Hwy.

You are limited to 45 mph at all times.
This is the compromise that kept us from needing to add DOT approved tires.
If we went over 45mph we would have had to switch.  We didn't think everyone would
like the idea of springing for DOT tires.

Personally I didn't think this was a bad trade.  I don't plan to be cruising the oil for 50
miles at a whack anyway.  Of course I can't keep you from speeding.

BTW, I saw a really sweet looking Street legal kit yesterday.
All LED lights, a couple of different styles to choose from.  Easy install.
Should be ready to go as soon as the Safety Inspection manual is published.

This can be solved quite simply.

Call Tom Gnojek in the Price BLM office at 435-636-3631.

Tell him the details of where you are riding.

If he tells you its okay to go cross country there then I am fine with it.

Come back in here and clear this up, tell us what he said.

#307 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-10 12:54:24

Except that I do know where you are riding.
You said "Green River" area.
Since your photos do not show you at White wash dunes on the sand then
there is no open riding in that area as explained to me by Tom just today.

So unless you are riding on private land ALL logic tells me that if you are going off
of the designated trails, which you said you were, then you are riding illegal.

What else is there to need to know, its simple math.

Obviously you are old enough to know but sadly you don't care.

#308 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-10 11:58:35

Guys,  calling me names and making disparaging comments is juvenile.
I don't think it helps make your point do you?

And making tongue in cheek concessionary "alright dad we agree, wink wink"
replies makes you look like a 12 year old.

And you wonder why the greenies hate us all and want us off the land.
Its because you don't think this is serious.  It is very serious.

I spend countless hours fighting to maintain access.  I attended all 6 BLM RMP
meetings in Utah and wrote recommended changs to every one of them.
I have over 500 hours logged  sitting in BLM offices fighting for YOUR right to
ride and this is the only attitude you can muster on the subject?

It is just this type of attitude that is going to keep my grandchildren from
being able to ride public lands.  I do not take this topic lightly at all.

#309 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-10 11:26:37

Sorry guys I am calling bullshit.

There is NO open riding in that area.  I called Tom Gnojek and asked him.
Tom is the BLM manager responsible for OHVs in the Green River district.

So stop telling people they can go down there and ride anywhere they want.
And inviting them to go do it with you is no different.
It is not true, if you think it is then post some details.

If you are in a "category" you put yourself there with this post.

Playing "we need to keep this a secret so the hordes won't damage it" is crap.

#310 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-10 10:31:43

I am minding my own business.

This post is telling people that you can ride anywhere you want down by Green River
as though it was an open OHV riding area, unrestricted to designated trails.

That is not true and you know it.  If it were you would post the exact details of where
and how you access this phantom "Open OHV" area.

It becomes my business when people like you decide to flaunt the rules and
jeopardize my access.

This is how we lose riding trails and organizations like SUWA use posts just like this post
to get the closures accomplished.

Now either post the details or admit you were riding illegal and give it up but for the sake
of the sport stop pretending you are right.

Jumping up and down and "claiming" you are legal does not make it so.  If you are legal then
posting the details is no big deal is it?

#311 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-10 08:16:27

So your saying you know its illegal. Thanks guys.  Very adult.
The rest of us thank you for trashing our sport.

For the rest of you who are capable of understanding the gravity of
this issue you can verify that there is NO open OHV cross country riding in
the Green River area (other than the SAND at White Wash dunes).

Call Tom Gnojek in the Price BLM office and he will be happy to inform you
of the facts.  435-636-3631  he will provide you with a travel plan map.

#312 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-09 19:32:38

Really?

Exactly what is the name of this open OHV riding area and where do you access it?

#314 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » RZR Brake Pedal Mod » 2008-07-09 10:20:00

I did it and its great!

I was having real issues double peddling.
The bottom right of the pedal kept hooking the side of my right boot.

I rode with this for three days on the Paiute over the 4th and it never hooked once.

Also never felt like I was going to "miss" the brake peddle because it was smaller.

#315 Re: Goin' Riding... Who's with Me? » Memorial Day green River, Ut. » 2008-07-09 10:05:12

Rhinoryder,

It was not a personal slam against you.

You said "it's awesome because you don't have stay on a trail, you can go anywhere your UTV will take you."
I have no doubt you have been riding in the open for 10 years. It WAS legal.

BUT the law has changed.  There is no longer ANY open riding unless designated like the Dunes at Jericho.
Cross country riding has been closed, end of story.

You really need to check with your ranger friends again.
